United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon

Another week has gone by and the UN is still begging the EU for troops to deploy to Lebanon in order to augment the 2,000-man UNIFIL militia to 15,000, in an area where Israel and Hezbollah stand toe-to-toe in a tense standoff that the is presented to America and Europe as a cease-fire. In reality, Israel and Hezbollah continue behind the scenes to conduct military operations, such as the failed commando raid Israel conducted a few days ago, in an effort to fortify positions within Lebanon. The tenuous situation is explosive while the EU tries to determine how it will refrain from getting caught up in the carnage should Israel decide to conduct any more raids deeper into Lebanon.

Can you imagine how confusing it would be for the UN to attempt to disarm a militia that is defending itself on its own lands, or fire upon Israeli troops that have been given authority and support by the U.S. and Great Britain to do whatever it will in Lebanon despite the 900+ civilian casualties and million-plus displacement of peoples while destroying thier homes and infrastructures?

In spite of the reluctance of the EU to supply troops, that is the only method acceptable in the region … to place a plethora of other small nations between Israel and Hezbollah to attempt to control a disastrous situation initially created by the U.S. and Great Britain in the 1940s.

So, how did the U.S. and Great Britain create this mess? The history is in my book.
