Iran Proposes World-wide Debate with US

On Wednesday, Sept. 6, Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad proposed a face-to-face, head-to-head debate with president George W. Bush to be held at the United Nations conference scheduled for next month.

“We are ready to discuss the ways of managing the world for achieving justice, peace, friendship and removing violations and threats. We propose the debate to say the period of bullying has expired, but false advocators of democracy avoided it because of their arrogance and lack of logic.”

- Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad

On Tuesday, Sept. 5 president George Bush said a nuclear-armed Iran would raise a mortal threat to the American people and would blackmail the free world. He also said:

“America did not seek this global struggle, but we’re answering history’s call with confidence and a clear strategy. All civilized nations are bound together in this struggle between moderation and extremism. By coming together, we will roll back this grave threat to our way of life.”

- United States president George W. Bush

When we seek the truth beneath the veneer of propaganda and distortions of truth, it is crucial to take into consideration the patterns that develop under such close scrutiny. We cannot simply look at the single question at hand but rather examine the events that have led to the purported question. The patterns of history tell us more about what is occurring today than the present-day propaganda. Patterns such as:

The U.S. claimed in 2002-03 that WMDs existed in Iraq and a nuclear attack upon Israel was imminent. No such WMDs existed and today Iraq is fully engaged in a three-way war between the two main religious groups and the occupation by U.S. troops and covert agents.
The U.S. claimed in 1990-01 that 120,000 Iraqi forces were amassed along the border of Kuwait and Saudi Arabia in preparation for an invasion of Saudi Arabia. A subsequent invasion of Iraq by U.S. forces revealed no such massive amount of troops ever were gathered along the Kuwaiti border with Saudi Arabia nor was any invasion of Saudi Arabia planned or coordinated. Yet, U.S. troops were sent to Saudi Arabia under the pretext of defending the Islamic kingdom.

The U.S. claimed that Saddam Hussein was a mass murderer and guilty of using weapons of mass destruction on his own people. Yet the results of investigations revealed that the U.S. not only supported Hussein during his reign of terror, but supplied him with both the weaponry he used and the means by which to deploy such horrific death.

The nation of Iran has been the victim of both a U.S.-led coup (1953) and an invasion by Iraq (1980) supported and assisted by the U.S.

Today, the U.S. proclaims that Iran is a nation to be feared. Iran says the U.S. lies.
